de（下へ）＋press（押す）で、気分を上から押し下げてくること。人の心を沈ませる働きを持つものを指して「気が滅入る」という形容詞になった。
押し下げてくる側が depressing、押し下げられた人の側は depressed（落ち込んでいる）。この -ing と -ed の対は取り違えやすいので、力の向きで見分ける。
a depressing story（気の滅入る話）のように、天気・知らせ・数字など、こちらの気分を下げてくる対象に広く使う。
