depressの語源と覚え方
覚え方
de（下へ）＋press（押す）で、上から力をかけて下へ沈めること。物を押し下げる動きがそのまま人の心に移って「落ち込ませる」、力で押さえつける「圧迫する」になった。
綴りに press が見えたら「押す」、頭の de で向きが「下」と読む。pressure（圧力）と並べると、同じ押す力が下向きに働いている像がつかめる。
押し下げられる相手は物・気分・経済と幅広く、名詞の depression が「憂鬱」にも「不況」にもなるのはこのためである。
