覚え方
co-（共に）+ equal（等しい） で「同格の・対等の」。ラテン語 coaequālis（同格の・同年輩の）= con-（共に）+ aequālis（等しい） と同じ組み立てを、英語側でもなぞった形である。
単に equal と言うより「互いに」を強調する語で、coequal branches of government（対等な三権）のように、並び立つ者同士の関係を述べるときに使う。
con- は *kom-（共に） に遡る。co- は相手あってこその「共に」で、coexist・coauthor・cooperate も同じ読み方が通る。
