congruousの語源と覚え方

gruo の部分はラテン語 congruō「一致する・適合する」に含まれ、寄り合ってぴたりと重なる感じの語。con（共に）と合わさって「互いに合っている」が芯になり、性質や調子が周囲とそろっている状態を表す。
実際には否定形の incongruous（場違いな・ちぐはぐな）のほうが圧倒的によく使われ、congruous 自体は文語的。congruous with the surroundings（周囲と調和した）のように with を続ける。
名詞は congruity（適合・調和）、同系に congruent（一致した・合同の）がある。in- が付けば「合っていない」と反転する。
