ラテン語 congruō（一致する・適合する） の現在分詞 congruēns から。*con-（共に）+ gruō（突き進む） で、「複数のものが同じ方向へ寄り合って合致する」が原義。
一般には「（事実や考えが）一致する・調和する」で、congruent with our values（我々の価値観に合致する）のように with を取る。数学では合同を表し、congruent triangles（合同な三角形）、整数論では congruent modulo n（法 n で合同）と言う。
名詞は congruence（一致・合同）、反対は incongruent。*kom-（共に） が芯なので、similar（相似＝形が同じで大きさは違う）に対し、congruent は大きさまでぴたり重なるという違いを押さえておきたい。
