consultの語源と覚え方
覚え方
cōnsultum（法令・決議）は、cōnsulō（相談する・熟慮する）の分詞 cōnsultus を名詞にした語である。cōnsulō は「取る・つかむ」を意味する語根から来ている。
cōnsulō にすでに「相談する」の意味があり、consult はそれを受け継いで「専門家の意見を求める」→「相談する・診察を受ける」の意味で使う。医師に相談する consult a doctor や、専門家に助言を求める consult an expert のように使う。
「取る・つかむ」を手がかりに、consult は「意見を取り込む」と考えると覚えやすい。consultation（相談・診察）や consultant（相談相手・顧問）も同じ発想で理解できる。
