direの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 dīrus（恐ろしい・不吉な） から。もとは凶兆や神罰について使う宗教色の濃い語で、単に悪いのではなく「破滅を予感させるほど悪い」という重さがある。
芯は *dwey-（恐れる）。dinosaur の dino-（恐ろしい）と同じ流れで、dire＝恐れを呼ぶほど深刻と押さえるとよい。
補足: 定型句が多く、dire straits（絶体絶命の窮地）・dire consequences（重大な結果）・in dire need of（〜が切実に必要で）。くだけた会話では単に「ひどい・最悪だ」の意味でも使う。
