覚え方
ラテン語 dēspērō（すべての期待を失い、絶望する）に由来する。dē-（下へ・離れて）+ spērō（期待する・待つ）で、「期待から離れてしまう」ことが原義。そこから dēspērātus（絶望した）を経て、「切羽詰まった・絶望的な」という意味になった。
「望みがすっかり離れている」状態を思い浮かべると、desperate の切実さが覚えやすい。desperation（絶望、必死さ）も同じ仲間で、de- が付いて、もとの期待から離れると読むのがコツ。
