覚え方
古い形 despeir（絶望・希望喪失）から、despair は「希望を失う、諦める」という意味になった。希望が残っていない状態を表す名詞から、やがて「絶望する」という動詞としても使われるようになった。
despair は、単に悲しいというより「望みがないと感じて、手を引く」強い感情を表す。desperate（絶望的な、必死の）・desperation（絶望、必死さ）も同じ仲間なので、despair を見たら「希望を失う」と押さえるとよい。
