古フランス語 surrendre（明け渡す・降伏する）= sur-（上に・超えて）+ rendre（返す・引き渡す）。この rendre はラテン語 reddō（返す・引き渡す）にさかのぼり、「相手の上に返して渡す」ようなイメージから、「降伏する・明け渡す・諦める」へ発展した。
