down1の語源と覚え方
覚え方
古英語 dūn（丘）とつながる語。「丘の上から」を表した言い方が縮まって、「高い所から低い方へ」 という方向の語になったもので、もとは地形を見下ろす目線に根ざしている。
そこから、位置の「下へ」、量や勢いの「低下」（prices are down）、機械やシステムの「停止中」（the server is down）、気分の「落ち込み」（feel down）まで広がる。すべて「基準より下」 の一語で束ねられる。
補足: 鳥の綿毛の down（ダウンジャケット）はまったく別の語なので、同音異義として切り離して覚える。
