downtownの語源と覚え方
覚え方
downtown は、down（下へ・町の方へ）+ town（町・都市）の組み合わせ。「町の方へ下りていく」という移動のイメージから、都市の中心部や商業地を指すようになった。日本語の「街中」「中心街」に近い。
down は方向、town は場所を示すので、方向語+場所の組み合わせで中心部を思い浮かべるのがコツ。go downtown（街中へ行く）、downtown area（中心街の地域）のように、副詞にも名詞・形容詞にも使われる。
