ラテン語 duālis（二つから成る） = duo（二）+ -ālis（〜に関する）。数の「二」を形容詞にした語で、「二つそろってひと組になっている」ことを表す。

dual citizenship（二重国籍）、dual-core（デュアルコア）のように、同じものが二つそろって働く場面で使う。duo（二人組）・duet（二重奏）・duplex（二重の）も同じ「二」の仲間で、du- を見たら「二」と読めばよい。

補足: 綴りも発音も近い duel（決闘）は別語なので混同しないこと。
