dwarfの語源と覚え方
覚え方
英語 dwarf は古英語 dweorg（小人）をほぼそのまま受け継いだ語で、伝承に登場する「小柄な人型の存在」を指す語として使われ続けている。
そこから意味が広がり、標準よりも著しく小さいものを表す形容詞（a dwarf planet のように）や、「何かを実際より小さく見せる」という動詞の意味も生まれた。
派生語の dwarfish（小人のような）、dwarfism（小人症）と合わせて覚えるとよい。複数形が dwarfs／dwarves の二通りある点にも注意したい。
