英語 shadow（影）は古英語 sċeaduwe（影・陰）がそのまま受け継がれた語で、意味も形もほとんど変わっていない基本語彙。印欧祖語 *(s)ḱeh₃-（闇・影）にさかのぼるとされる。
光が遮られてできる暗い部分という基本的な意味は現代まで変わらず、比喩的に「（誰かに）付きまとう影のような存在」という意味にも広がった。
同じ *(s)ḱeh₃- の仲間には shade（日陰）があり、shadow と shade はどちらも「光を遮ってできる暗がり」を指す兄弟のような語である。shad(e/ow) を見たら「影・陰」と覚えるとよい。
