ラテン語 appāritiō（奉仕・随行）= appāreō（現れる・見えてくる）+ -tiō（動作や結果を表す）。もとは「主人の前に姿を現して仕えること」で、芯にあるのは「ふっと現れる」。

英語では「現れたもの」に重心が移り、説明のつかない現れ方をするもの＝幽霊・まぼろしを指すようになった。ghost が死者の霊そのものを指すのに対し、apparition は「目に見えて現れた姿」に注目する語。

appāreō は appear（現れる）・apparent（見た目に明らかな）と同じ系統で、appar- は「目に見えてくる」。transparent（透けて見える）も同じ「見える」仲間。
