ラテン語 appāreō（観察者に目に見えるようになる・明確に顕現する）に由来する appārēns（見えるようになっている）が apparent のもとになった。分解すると ad-（〜へ）+ pāreō（現れる・従う）で、対象が観察者の前へ現れてくるイメージである。

目の前にはっきり現れれば、隠れているものではなく「明らかだ」と判断できる。一方、外から見えているだけで本質までは確かでない場合もあるため、apparent には「明白な」と「外見上の」の両方の意味がある。

appear・appearance も同じ「現れる」イメージを持つ。appear を見たら、何かが視界の前へ現れると考えると、apparent の「明らかに見える」感覚をつかみやすい。
