ラテン語 spectrum(現れ・幻影)に由来し、そのもとに speciō(見る)がある。目の前に姿を現すもの、というつながりから、specter は「幽霊・亡霊」を指す。
比喩では the specter of unemployment が「失業の不安・脅威」。まだ現実になっていなくても、恐ろしい可能性が頭から離れない状態である。姿を現す亡霊と、心にちらつく脅威を一緒に思い浮かべると、この使い方まで思い出せる。英国式の綴りは spectre。
