ラテン語 integrum（完全な・無傷の）から。**「触れる（teh₂g-）」＋ 打ち消しの n̥- で、「まだ誰にも手を付けられていない」が原義。
手つかず＝欠けがない、なので「全体の・丸ごとの」。whole に近いが、entire は「一部も欠けていない・分割されていない」という完全性を強調する。
同じ integrum から integer（分数でない完全な数＝整数）・integrity（損なわれていない人格＝高潔さ）が出ている。*teh₂g-（触れる）は tangible・contact・tangent の tang/tact。
