epi-（上に）+ centre（中心） で「中心の真上」。ギリシャ語 ἐπῐ́（〜の上に・〜において）がこの epi- にあたる。
地震学では、地下で断層が動いた点の真上にあたる地表の一点を指す。地下側は hypocentre（hypo- は「下に」）で、両者は上下の関係で対になっている。そこから比喩として「騒動の中心地」にも広がった。
centre は *ḱent-（突く）にさかのぼり、central（中心の）・concentrate（中心に集める→集中する）と同族。米式つづりは epicenter。
