古英語 forþor（さらに前へ） から。forth（前へ）の比較級にあたる語で、「もっと先へ」が芯にある。
現代英語では far（遠い）の比較級として働き、本来は物理的な距離に使う。farther down the road（道をもっと先へ行ったところ）、the farther bank（向こう岸）。最上級は farthest。
紛らわしい further は距離にも使えるうえ、「さらに進んだ・追加の」という程度や抽象の意味も担う（further information 追加情報、further discussion さらなる議論）。距離なら farther、それ以外は further と切り分けると迷いにくい。
