ラテン語 fluō（流れる） の「流れている」形 fluēns から来た語。水の流れをそのまま言葉や動きに当てはめて、「よどみない」を表す。

be fluent in French（フランス語が流暢だ）、a fluent speaker（すらすら話す人）、fluent movement（滑らかな動き）。語学の意味が有名だが、つっかえずに続くという感覚は動作にも使える。
