覚え方
further（さらに先へ）+ -more（比較の形容詞・副詞を作る） で「さらにその上に」。中英語の furthermore がそのまま現代まで残った形である。
議論で根拠を積み増すときのつなぎ語で、書き言葉寄りの硬い響きを持つ。besides や what's more が会話向きなのに対し、furthermore は論文や報告書で使う。moreover とほぼ同義だが、すでに述べたことに同じ向きの材料を足す位置に置くのが基本である。
背後にある *per-（前に・前方に）は forth（前へ）・further（もっと前へ）と共通する。「前へ、さらに前へ」から「その上さらに」が出たと押さえるとよい。
