more（さらに）+ over（それを越えて）。「今言ったことを越えて、さらに」が字義で、中英語の段階ですでに moreover と一語に固まっていた。
働きは接続副詞で、前に述べた主張を補強する材料を付け足すときに使う。文頭に置いてコンマを打つのが基本形で、The plan is expensive. Moreover, it is risky.（費用がかかる。しかも危険だ）のように続ける。
besides・furthermore・in addition が近いが、moreover は書き言葉寄りで、論文やビジネス文書向き。話し言葉では plus や and also が普通である。however（how + ever）や nevertheless と同じ、語をつないで作った硬い副詞の一族と考えるとよい。
