古英語 hearpe（竪琴・ハープ）をそのまま受け継いだ、外来語ではない古い楽器名。弦を指ではじく大型の弦楽器を指す。
面白いのは動詞の用法で、harp on ~ は「同じ弦ばかり鳴らし続ける」感覚から「同じことをくどくど言い続ける」。Don't harp on it.（その話を蒸し返すな）のように、うんざりする反復を表す。
harpsichord（ハープシコード＝チェンバロ）や harpist（ハープ奏者）も同じ仲間。「同じ弦をつま弾き続ける」が、楽器と「くどくど言う」をつなぐ橋になる。
