覚え方
古英語 dwellan（惑わす・妨げる） から来た語。もとは「人を足止めして先へ行かせない」ことで、そこから「その場にとどまる」→「住む」へと意味が移った。
「立ち去らずに、そこに居続ける」が dwell の芯。場所について使えば「住む・生息する」、話題について使えば dwell on 〜（〜をくよくよ考え続ける・くどくど語る）になる。どちらも同じ一点から離れないという一つの像で説明がつく。
補足: やや文語的で、日常の「住む」は live が普通。名詞 dwelling（住居）は法律・不動産の文書でよく見る。
