覚え方
occupy は、ラテン語 occupō（占拠する・先制して奪取する・埋める）に由来する。ob-（〜に向かって・〜に対して）+ capiō（取る・捕らえる）で、向かって行って先に取るという構造である。
先に場所を取って自分のものにすることから、「占有する・占領する」へ発展した。さらに、場所だけでなく、役職を「務める」、時間や注意を「取る・使わせる」という意味にも広がっている。
capiō の背景にある *kap-（つかむ・保持する）を意識し、occupy は「向かってつかみ、場所や時間をふさぐ」と覚えると、occupied（占有された・忙しい）の意味もつながる。
