動詞 postulate は、ラテン語 postulātus(公式に要求された・法的に請求された)に由来する。postulātus ← *preḱ-(祈る・請願する)という流れから、「正式に願い出て、相手に認めさせようとする」というイメージが生まれる。
そこから、命題を根本的に真実だと提唱する「仮定する」、また正式に任命を求める「請願する」という意味になった。postulate=公に求めて、前提として置くと覚えれば、単なる希望ではなく、根拠や手続きの上で要求する語感までつかめる。
