requireの語源と覚え方

古フランス語 requerre（求める・要求する）から。もとはラテン語 re-（後ろへ・再び）+ quaerō（探す・尋ねる）、その合成形 requīrō（探し求める・要求する）で、「重ねて探し、問い求める」が原義。
「探して求める」が強まって「必要とする・条件として要求する」へ。want（欲しい）より客観的で、規則や事情から見て「欠かせない」と言うときに使う。
quaerō の仲間は quest（探索）・inquire（尋ねる）・acquire（求めて手に入れる）・conquer（求めて勝ち取る）。名詞形 requirement は「要件・必要条件」。
