ラテン語 praemittō = prae-（前に）+ mittō（送る）の分詞から。「議論の前に送り出されて置かれた命題」が「前提」。論理学で結論より前に置く文、という用法がそのまま英語に入った。

複数形 premises（構内・建物）も同じ語で、「証書の前段に記された物件」→「その物件・敷地」と転じたもの。mittō（送る）の一族は mission（送られた使命）・submit（下に送る→提出する）・permit（通して送る→許す）。mit／miss は「送る」。
