thesis はラテン語 thesēs（命題・主張）から来た語で、もとは 置く・なす を表す *dʰeh₁- と結びつく。考えを議論の場に「置く」というのが、thesis の原イメージである。
議論の土台として置かれた考えが、「命題」「主張」「仮説」を意味するようになり、学術的にまとめて提出する「論文」も thesis と呼ばれるようになった。
thesis は「自分の考えを論じる場に置いたもの」と覚えるとよい。antithesis（反対命題）や synthesis（複数の要素を組み合わせたもの）でも、考えや要素を置くイメージを意識すると理解しやすい。
