ラテン語 illūsōrius（嘲るような・欺く）から来た語で、中身は illūsor（あざける者）+ -ius（名詞から形容詞を作る語尾）。「人を欺くような」が原義である。
そこから「見えてはいるが実体がない」となり、illusory gains（見せかけの利益）・an illusory sense of security（根拠のない安心感）のように使う。「そう見えるだけで中身がない」と読めばよい。
名詞は illusion（錯覚）。似た語 elusive（とらえどころのない）は「逃げて捕まらない」ほうなので、illusory（実体がない）と区別する。
