il は「中へ」、lus は「遊ぶ」。人を相手に遊ぶ、つまりからかい欺くことが芯で、ラテン語 illūsōrius（嘲るような・欺く）から英語に入った。
そこから「見えてはいるが実体がない」となり、illusory gains（見せかけの利益）・an illusory sense of security（根拠のない安心感）のように使う。そう見えるだけで中身がない、と読めばよい。
名詞は illusion（錯覚）。似た elusive（とらえどころのない）は「逃げて捕まらない」ほうなので区別する。
