ラテン語 interceptiō から出た語で、英語の intercept（途中で捕らえる）の名詞形にあたる。inter-（間に）と「つかむ」側の要素からできていて、目的地に届く前に途中で取り上げるのが原義。
capture（捕らえる）・receive（受け取る）・accept（受け入れる）も同じ「つかむ・取る」の要素を含む。
アメフトでは相手のパスを横取りすることを interception と呼び、通信では傍受を指す。
