ラテン語 intercipiō（途中で奪う・さえぎる）から。inter-（間に）+ capiō（取る・捕らえる） で、A から B へ向かうものを「その途中でつかみ取る」。過去分詞 interceptus の形が英語の綴りに残っている。芯は *kap-（つかむ）。
だから intercept は「相手に届く前に捕まえる」動きすべてに使える。intercept a pass（サッカーやアメフトでパスをカットする）、intercept a missile（ミサイルを迎撃する）、intercept communications（通信を傍受する）。街に攻めてきた怪獣を迎え撃つのも intercept でよい。
*kap- の仲間は capture（捕獲する）・capable（受け止められる→能力がある）・receive（受け取る）。cept/cap を見たら「つかむ」と読み、前の接頭辞が「どこでつかむか」を決めると考える。
