覚え方
except（除外する）+ -ion（行為・結果・状態を表す名詞を作る）。ラテン語 exceptiō（例外）= excipiō（取り出す）+ -tiō（動作・過程・結果を表す名詞を作る） に重なる形で、全体からつまみ出されたものが exception の正体。
だから exception は「規則の外に置かれた一件」。with the exception of ~（〜を除いて）・without exception（例外なく）・make an exception（特別扱いする）が定番で、the exception that proves the rule（例外があることが規則の存在を示す）も決まり文句。
take exception to ~ は「〜に異議を唱える・腹を立てる」で、除外の意味からずれるので別に覚える。芯の *kap-（つかむ・保持する） は capture・accept と同じ。except（動詞）と exception（その結果）を対で押さえると使い分けに迷わない。
