- 英語legendary非常に有名な・伝説的な
覚え方
legend（伝説）+ -ary（〜に関する形容詞を作る）。中世ラテン語 legendārius を経た形で、legend の背後には *leǵ-（集める）、つまり文字を拾い集めて読むという核がある。
本来は「伝説の・言い伝えの」で、legendary creatures（伝説上の生き物）のように使う。そこから褒め言葉に転じ、「語り草になるほど有名な」の意味が日常では中心になった。a legendary player（伝説的な選手）・legendary hospitality（語り草の手厚いもてなし）。
補足: 伝説のポケモンは英語でも legendary Pokémon。フリーザーが Articuno、サンダーが Zapdos のように個々の名前は変わるが、Pokémon という呼び名は各国共通で、発音は「ポキモン」に近い人もいる。混同されやすい「幻のポケモン」は mythical Pokémon と呼び分ける。
