legendの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 legō（集める・選ぶ） から、「読まれるべきもの」を表す legendā・legendus という形が生まれた。文字を拾い集めることが「読む」であり、中世には教会で読み上げるべき聖人の物語をこう呼んだ。
そうした話は語り継がれるうちに事実の裏づけが薄れていくので、「言い伝え・伝説」になった。urban legend（都市伝説）・a legend about the lake（湖にまつわる伝説）。人にも使い、a living legend（生きた伝説＝伝説的人物）。
地図やグラフの「凡例」を legend と呼ぶのは、「読むための説明書き」という元の意味がそのまま残った例。同じ「集める・選ぶ」の系統には collect（集める）・select（選ぶ）・lecture（読み上げること→講義）が並ぶ。
