古フランス語 niceté に由来し、英語では nice + -ty（形容詞から抽象名詞を作る -ity の異形） の形になっている。cruelty・safety と同じ作り。
意味は現在の nice（感じのよい）から離れ、「微妙な点・細かい違い」「細かな作法」を指す。the niceties of the law（法律の細かい点）のように、たいてい複数形で使う。nice はもとをたどると *skey-（裂く・分ける）にゆきつき、分けて区別する側の中身が nicety に残っている。
同じ *skey- からは science・conscience が出ている。
