覚え方
古英語 niht（夜）をそのまま受け継いだ、英語のもっとも古い層に属する語。日没から日の出までを一続きに指す。
綴りの gh はかつて発音されていた音の名残で、今は読まない。音の似た knight（騎士）とは語源も意味も無関係なので、別語と割り切ってよい。
合成語で覚えると早い。tonight（今夜）・midnight（真夜中）・overnight（一晩で）、そして fortnight は「十四夜」から「二週間」。夜を単位に日数を数える古い習慣が残った例である。
