覚え方
obi はラテン語 obeō（〜へ行く）で、そこから死を婉曲に言う obitus（逝去）ができた。行ってしまうことを死とする発想は、日本語の「他界する」と同じ。それを扱うものを表す ry が付いた obituārius は、もとは修道院などで死者を記した帳面を指した。
英語では新聞の「死亡記事・訃報」。read the obituaries（訃報欄を読む）のように使い、略して obit とも言い、an obituary notice は死亡広告。exit（出て行く）とも「行く」で通じる。
