ovalの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 ōvālis（卵形の）から。ōvum（卵）+ -ālis（〜に関する） で、「卵に関する形の」が原義。
卵を横から見た形がそのまま楕円形なので、幾何の「楕円形・長円」を指す語になり、名詞で競技場のトラックや広場も指す（the Oval Office＝米大統領執務室は楕円形の部屋）。
ōvum は生物学の ovum（卵子）・ovary（卵巣）としても英語に入っている。ov- を見たら「卵」と読むとよい。
