lip は「残したままにする・欠ける」を表す部分で、se が行為や状態の名詞にする。何かが足りない、というのがこの語の芯である。
円錐を斜めに切った断面のうち、完全な円には「足りない」形が楕円で、欠けているという見方がこの語に残っている。数学では、二つの焦点からの距離の和が一定になる曲線を指す。
同じ lip は eclipse（光が欠ける→日食）にも見え、そこに気づけば綴りから意味へたどり着ける。形容詞は elliptical（楕円形の）で、軌道や機械の動きを言うときによく出る。
