古英語 penning(小額の銀貨) を受け継いだ語で、英国で最も小さい額の硬貨を指す。
複数形が二通りある点が要注意で、硬貨そのものを数えるときは pennies(five pennies=5 枚の硬貨)、金額を言うときは pence(five pence=5 ペンス)と使い分ける。書き言葉では 5p と略し、口語では「ファイブ・ピー」と読む。
小額の代表として慣用句も多い。not have a penny(一文なし)、penniless(無一文の)、A penny for your thoughts.(何を考えているの)、pinch pennies(けちけち節約する)、The penny dropped.(英国口語で「はたと合点がいった」)。「いちばん小さい金額」という感覚をつかめば、どの言い回しも読み解ける。
