ラテン語 pertineō(関連する・属する)= per-(通り抜けて・徹底的に)+ teneō(持つ・保つ)。ある事柄にしっかり結びついて持続する、というイメージから「関係がある」という意味になった。
そこから、単に関係があるだけでなく、その場の問題にきちんと結びついている「適切な・妥当な」へ発展した。teneō のもとにある *ten-(伸ばす)を手がかりに、pertinent は話題に伸びてつながっていると覚えるとよい。
