覚え方
lev はラテン語 levō（持ち上げる。元は levis「軽い」）で、re が付いた relevō は「持ち上げて支える」。その分詞形 relevāns が、論点を支える＝問題にかかわるという意味で使われ、スコットランド語 relevant（法的に有効な）を経て「関連する」になった。
核は、その場の判断を持ち上げて助けるかどうか。触れているだけの話ではなく、材料として効く話が relevant。
関係のない話は irrelevant。elevate・relieve と同じ lev の一族。
