覚え方
英語 plating は動詞 plate（金属で覆う）に、動作や状態を表す語尾 -ing を付けた語。金属を薄く覆うことから「めっき」を意味する。
同じ語形は古英語 platung（金属の薄板）にもさかのぼるとされる。plate は『薄い金属板で覆う』が基本イメージ。
現在では「皿に盛り付ける」という plate の意味から、料理の盛り付け（plating）を指す使い方も広がっている。
