中英語 purgynge から。もとのラテン語 pūrgō は *pewH-（清める）の系統で、英語の purge（取り除く・清める）になった。
不純物を取り除くこと全般を指し、医学では腸を空にすること、政治では組織から人を追放する粛清を purge と呼ぶ。現在分詞の語尾は、古英語の -ende が -ynge の形を経て今の -ing に落ち着いたもの。同じ *pewH- の系統には pure（清らかな）・purify（清める）・puritan がある。
