amaze（驚嘆させる）+ -ing（動詞の現在分詞を作る） で「驚かせるほどの→驚くべき・すばらしい」。amaze は古英語 *āmasian（困惑させる）= ā-（離れて・外へ）+ masian（惑わす・混乱させる） に由来し、その先には *uʀ-（上へ・外へ）がある。
もとの感覚は「わけが分からなくなるほど」。迷路の maze と同じ「頭が真っ白になる」イメージが、現代では良い方向の感動に振り切れている。
補足: -ing は「驚かせる側」、-ed は「驚かされる側」。an amazing view（すばらしい眺め）／I was amazed（私は驚いた）と使い分ける。
