覚え方
珍しくラテン語系ではなくゲルマン系の語。古英語 oncnāwan（真実だと認める）は cnāwan（知る） に「逆に・返して」を表す接頭辞を付けた語で、cnāwan はそのまま今の know。
「知っていると相手に示す」→「事実だと認める」「受け取ったと知らせる」→「礼を述べる」。ビジネスの acknowledge receipt（受領を確認する）は原義そのままの用法。名詞 acknowledgement は「受領確認」「（本の）謝辞」。
「知る」を表す語根は、ラテン語経由で入った recognize・notice・diagnosis とも共通。kn / gn / cogn は「知る」と押さえると、ゲルマン系とラテン系がつながる。
