receipt は、古フランス語 receite（領収書・計算書）を経て、物や金銭を「受け取ったことの記録」を表すようになった。背後には *kap-（つかむ・保持する） というイメージがあり、受け取ったものを手元に確保する感覚と結びついている。
そこから receipt は、単なる受け取りだけでなく、その事実を証明する「領収書・受領証」も意味する。ceipt を見たら「受け取って確保した記録」と覚えると、receive など受領に関わる語とも意味を結びつけやすい。
